There Really Is a Cruise for Everyone
Here’s How to Find Yours!
Introduction
Each year, I attend the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) seminar, a two-day event where 28 different cruise lines present their latest ships, itineraries, and innovations. Some years the focus is on new ship launches, other years it’s about each cruise line’s unique selling points, and sometimes it’s about sustainability and the future of cruising.
But no matter the focus, one thing remains clear:
🚢 There is truly a cruise for everyone!
Many people assume cruising is only for retirees or families, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Whether you’re a solo traveller looking for adventure, a couple wanting a romantic getaway, a group of friends seeking fun, or a family needing an all-in-one holiday, the perfect cruise is out there for you.
The challenge? Finding the one that best suits your style, interests, and expectations. And that’s where I come in!
Which Cruise Type Suits You Best?
With so many cruise lines, ships, and itineraries to choose from, it can be overwhelming to find the right one. But if you break it down by cruise type, ship size, and travel style, it becomes much easier to navigate.
Ocean, River, or Expedition – What’s Your Style?
Ocean Cruises – If you love the idea of sailing across vast open waters, waking up to a new destination every day, and enjoying endless entertainment, an ocean cruise is for you. Whether it's the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, or Alaska, these cruises take you to multiple ports while offering world-class dining, Broadway-style shows, and activities for all ages.
River Cruises – Perfect for those who love slow travel and cultural immersion. River cruises glide through historic waterways like the Danube, Rhine, Mekong, and Nile, stopping at charming towns and major cities along the way. Instead of spending days at sea, you're constantly surrounded by picturesque landscapes and have the chance to explore a new destination daily.
A good way to think of it is that an ocean cruise takes you across the open seas to many different places &/or countries and typically includes days at sea, whereas a river cruise takes you through a country (or countries) offering direct access to villages & towns along the way.
Expedition Cruises – If you crave adventure and exploration, expedition cruises take you to the most remote and untouched destinations on Earth. Think Antarctica, the Galápagos Islands, the Arctic Circle, and the Kimberley region. These smaller ships come equipped with Zodiacs for shore landings, expert guides, and unique wildlife encounters.
Size Matters – Choosing the Right Ship
The size of the ship plays a major role in the experience you'll have onboard.
Mega Ships (5,000+ passengers) – The Floating Resorts
If you love variety, entertainment, and a lively atmosphere, mega-ships like Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas are packed with activities, from surf simulators and skydiving simulators to Broadway-style shows and waterparks. Great for families, multigenerational travellers, and thrill-seekers.
Large Ships (2,700-4,999 passengers) – Big Experiences, Less Crowds
Large ships balance entertainment with more refined experiences. Think Princess Cruises or Celebrity Cruises, where you still get plenty of dining options, entertainment, and activities but with a slightly more upscale feel.
Mid-Size Ships (1,600-2,699 passengers) – A Happy Medium
Mid-size ships, like those from Holland America or Oceania, cater to those who enjoy elegant, relaxed cruising with quality dining and enrichment programs. These ships often offer fewer crowds while still providing entertainment and onboard amenities.
Small Ships (Under 800 passengers) – Intimate & Immersive
If you prefer a more personal, exclusive experience, small-ship cruising is for you. Luxury brands like Silversea, Seabourn, and Ponant focus on fine dining, personalized service, and immersive cultural experiences. These ships often visit off-the-beaten-path destinations that larger ships can’t reach.
Special Consideration: Expedition Cruising & The Antarctica 500, 200, 100 Rule
When it comes to expedition cruising—especially in Antarctica—ship size is even more critical. The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) enforces strict rules to protect the fragile ecosystem and limit the number of visitors at any given time.
Here’s what you need to know about the 500, 200, 100 rule for Antarctic landings:
🚢 Ships with more than 500 passengers → Cannot make landings in Antarctica. Guests can enjoy breathtaking views from the ship, but they won't set foot on land.
🚢 Ships with 200-500 passengers → Limited shore landings in specific areas. Passengers may get off the ship, but access is more restricted due to environmental regulations.
🚢 Ships with fewer than 200 passengers → The best option for a true Antarctic experience! These vessels can access smaller fjords and allow all passengers to participate in shore landings, giving you a more immersive experience.
🚢 A maximum of 100 passengers can be ashore at any one time in most landing zones, ensuring minimal impact on the environment.
Why This Matters
If visiting Antarctica is on your bucket list and you want to step foot on the continent, choosing a small expedition ship (under 200 passengers) is crucial. These ships, like those from Lindblad Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, and Ponant, provide specialist guides, Zodiac excursions, and wildlife encounters—making your Antarctic adventure truly unforgettable.
What’s Your Travel Style?
Not all cruise lines are created equal—each caters to a specific type of traveller. Here’s how to find your perfect fit:
Luxury Cruises – Indulge in Elegance
Luxury cruise lines like Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, and Seabourn offer all-suite accommodations, Michelin-star-level dining, exclusive shore excursions, and ultra-personalized service. Perfect for those who want elegance, exclusivity, and a stress-free, all-inclusive experience. Norwegian Cruise Line also offers "the Haven", a private retreat for suite guests. It offers luxury accommodations, exclusive amenities, and personal service including 24-hour butler service.
Expedition Cruises – Adventure Meets Comfort
Brands like Lindblad Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, and Ponant specialize in small-ship expeditions that take you to remote destinations without sacrificing comfort. Think polar bear sightings in the Arctic, hiking through Patagonia, or snorkeling in the Galápagos.
Family-Friendly Cruises – Fun for All Ages
If you’re travelling with kids, cruise lines like Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival are designed with families in mind. Kids’ clubs, waterparks, movie nights, and character meet-and-greets make these ships a dream for family holidays.
Adult-Only Cruises – Relaxation & Refinement
If you’re looking for a cruise without kids, options like Viking Cruises (strictly 18+), Virgin Voyages, and some Celebrity Cruises sailings offer a more refined, laid-back atmosphere with sophisticated entertainment and immersive destination experiences.
