Europe, with its rich diversity of cultures, landscapes, and experiences, makes the perfect solo travel destination. From the historic streets of Rome to the mountains of the Swiss Alps, every corner offers something unique to explore. Travelling solo doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone, nor travel alone! Here, I’ll show you how planning your European solo journey with expert help can make all the difference, ensuring your trip is smooth, memorable, and uniquely tailored to you.

Solo travel offers many benefits, especially when you explore a continent as varied as Europe. For men who often don’t receive the same level of support in solo travel planning, having someone to guide the journey is invaluable. Here’s what you gain from embarking on a solo adventure:

Why Consider a Group Tour? The Benefits for Male Solo Travellers
While solo travel offers a unique sense of freedom, joining a group tour—whether with other solo travellers or in a small group—can add extra benefits to your European adventure. Here’s why you might want to consider it:
- Instant Community & Connection: Travelling solo doesn’t have to mean going it alone the whole way. A group tour offers a built-in social circle, allowing you to meet like-minded travellers from the start. This can lead to shared memories, friendships, and support, especially valuable in unfamiliar places.
- Safety and Peace of Mind: Europe is generally safe for solo travellers, but having a group and guide ensures added peace of mind, particularly in more remote areas. Group tours are great for exploring regions where language barriers or unfamiliarity with local customs might make solo travel a bit challenging.
- Access to Unique Experiences: Many group tours offer exclusive access to experiences like guided hikes, private tastings, or local-led tours that would be harder to arrange alone. By joining a group, you can tap into curated adventures that bring out the best of each destination.
- Less Time on Logistics, More Time on Fun: Group tours handle transportation, accommodations, and itineraries, meaning you can focus on enjoying the experience without worrying about logistics. This is ideal for maximising your time if you’re exploring multiple destinations.

Practical Tips for Men Travelling Solo in Europe
Solo travel in Europe is generally safe, but there are a few essentials to keep in mind for a hassle-free journey:
- Pack Light and Smart: Make sure to bring versatile clothing, especially if you’ll be moving between different climates.
- Stay Connected: Get a reliable SIM card or data plan so you can access maps, contact local providers, and stay updated on your itinerary.
- Trust Local Insights: Relying on local recommendations can reveal lesser-known places that you might not find in guidebooks. When in doubt, I’m here to offer advice on great local spots and safety tips.
- Secure Your Belongings: Europe is generally safe, but common sense is essential. Keep your valuables secure, especially in busy areas.
Here are some personal examples of how easily things can happen:
- In Rome: We were about to board the metro when a little girl in front of us decided to do a dance, effectively blocking our way to get on the train. Finally her "mother" called her into the carriage allowing us to board. While we stood there nonchalantly waiting for the train to depart we noticed a lot of 'locals' were staring hard at the mother & child, who then proceeded to get off the train. As they got off, the little girl presented us with a mobile phone she had "picked" from the pocket of my travel companion's cargo shorts! The locals obviously knew what had transpired & thankfully ensured our belongings were returned to us!
- In Barcelona: We had just arrived and wanted to catch the airport bus into town. We joined a queue at a ticket machine who were noisily complaining that the machine wasn't working. As we stood there, a person came charging through the group knocking my travel companion's suitcase over, causing a ruckus. We didn't think too much of it, except what a nuisance it was! We found out we didn't actually need to purchase a ticket & that we could get one on the bus! It wasn't until we were on the bus that my companion realised his passport & credit cards had been swiped from his jacket pocket! While his credit card company was able to put a stop on the cards, he was told he would have to go to the embassy in Madrid to get an emergency passport issued. The stress & having to take time out on a short holiday was a painful reminder of how important it is to keep your valuables secure & never lose focus on your surroundings.
- In Paris: A travelling companion on a packed train from the airport got "chatting" to a local who was busily asking questions and appearing to be friendly. It was not until we got off the train that she found she'd been fleeced of a lot of AUD cash! This began a 3-day painful, time consuming task of reporting to the police and getting copies of documents for lodging an insurance claim.
- Standing in a packed crowd at the Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace, police on horseback were warning people to watch for pickpockets & to keep their belongings secure. In front of me, a woman had a handbag slung over her shoulder with the zip open. As we were standing there, I saw an arm come from behind me heading towards the woman's bag. I said "Oi, what do you think you're doing?" and the person skuttled away. The woman turned around & I told her someone had just tried to reach into her bag & that she should zip it!

My Solo Travel Experiences
I have travelled solo in Europe a couple of times.
The first time I did a Contiki tour, which was an awesome experience & a fun way to learn about Europe without doing it alone. The tour did 9 countries in 21 days. We saw & experienced some amazing things & I made a group of friends I remained in contact with for many years after. I often wonder what became of my "roomie" Bob Brown from Sydney! Where are you? :-)
The next trip I went truly solo. I'd just been through a painful separation & loss of a job, and was feeling a bit lost. I went to Dubrovnik & the Greek Islands, followed by some time in Barcelona. In those days, the internet wasn't quite as prolific as it is now, no smart phones, internet cafés where you could use clunky machines to check emails, that was about it. I somehow found a room in an apartment in Dubrovnik which was hot & uncomfortable, but Dubrovnik was beautiful! I fell in love with the place. The water was so clear. Lots of places to eat, bars to have a drink at while watching the sunset. It was just perfect for the soul. The Greek Islands were amazing, if not a little scary. I had decided I'd just catch at ferry & get accommodation when I arrived. In those days, property owners would meet the ferry & wave pictures of their rooms & prices in front of you as you approached. You then kind of just nodded acceptance & off you'd go following them to wherever the place was. Talk about putting trust in a stranger! It kind of goes against the whole personal security thing I discussed previously! But, I look back at those times as a period of great personal growth & lots of fun!
