Darwin, the tropical capital of the Northern Territory, lies on the picturesque Arafura Sea. On 19 February 1942, it faced a devastating Japanese air raid—the first of its kind on Australian soil. The attack claimed 235 lives, affecting both military personnel and civilians. Significant destruction followed, with 11 ships sunk, 30 aircraft destroyed, and part of the wharf obliterated, resulting in the deaths of 22 dock workers. Over the next 21 months, the surrounding areas, including Darwin, Adelaide River, Katherine, and Milingimbi in Arnhem Land, suffered a total of 77 bombing raids.
